My Photography: Jakarta Car Free Day

My Photography: Jakarta Car Free Day

In many big cities in the world, there is one certain day of the week where the city’s road is closed for a vehicle. Sunday is that day and the biggest road located in the center of Jakarta is closed for the vehicle. This is a story of my first Car Free Day in Jakarta. This is my photography: Jakarta Car Free Day.

I’ve lived in Jakarta for more than a decade, but never once I ever went to one. I had previously gone to Car Free Day event in Yogyakarta. And because of that, I want to go to Car Free Day in Jakarta. Which I did.

Jakarta Car Free Day event located in Jend. Sudirman Road, center around Selamat Datang Monument, also called Bundaran HI (for local). To get there from my house, I need to take the bus, because the bus is the only thing allowed to enter the place.

Of course, there’s a lot of activity in there. There people jogging, cycler, skateboard rider, market, and there also a weird dude singing alone in the middle of the road (no idea why). There’s a lot more, I assume. But I have no time to explore all of that.

Because there’s a lot of stuff happened, Jakarta Car Free Day is a perfect place to do a lot of photography. On the top of my head, I can think of doing street, landscape, architecture, model, sport, and action photography. Of course, I have that very idea in mind. My photography, architecture photography.

Jend. Sudirman Road is a road surrounded by many building and tower. Because of that, that road is a great place for architecture photography. The reason I choose to go there at Car Free Day is that I can freely take photo from the middle of the road. Which give a great angle to shot architecture.

For this one, I use my usual gears. Sony A58 with Tamron AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO, Sony A6000 with Sony E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS LensNisi 15 Stop Super Stopper and remote shutter.

One thing I realize when I tried to take a photo is the buildings are too big and my lens biggest focal length is 18mm, which is not enough to cover all of them in one frame. Which mean that I lack gear’s capability when it comes to metropolitan architecture photography. Because of that, I had to improvise.

Some photos were taken a bit farther than usual, some were taken in panorama, others were taken in some way that I even forgot how. Basically, I had to improvise the lack of gears capability with quick thinking.

From Bundaran HI, I walked a straight road south for almost 6 KM. Looking a good architecture and good architecture. There a lot of interesting architecture, but there are not so many compositions that I found interesting. Because of that, I don’t take many architecture photos. But I still got some good one.

So here is some finish result after I post-processing it:

Also, there are some more that I haven’t retouched yet. And also, I believe I already explore the entire place, so I gonna go there again on a later day. So stay tuned.
