3 Steps of Photography

Do you ever wonder if you did your photography right? It is a question I have asked a lot before. And yet there is no simple answer of right or wrong. But there is always guidance that can guide us. One of them is the 3 steps of photography that every photographer should follow and the questions you should ask every time.

I once wrote about the freedom of photography, how it allows us to be free to choose what we want to do. But there is always guidance that helps us find a good way. What I’m about to tell you is probably the basis of the basics of photography and you did it, even if you don’t realize it.

1. Pre-Processing

The first step is what I always called pre-processing. This is what we suppose to do even long before we take the actual shot. Basically, it means preparation. It included:

  1. What camera you should bring?
  2. What gear you should bring?
  3. How do you bring all of your photography gear?
  4. Where are you going?
  5. How do you get there?
  6. How is your location?
  7. What do you want to photograph?
  8. What additional items that you should bring?

All this planning is probably kinda complicated. But trust me, it is important. Especially if you’re into landscape photography, I think this is the most important step to understand and follow.

2. Processing

This step is the actual step of photography, where you take the shot. But of course as a photographer, or should I say a good photographer, just simply point-and-shoot is a no-no (sometimes it works though). You have to think through what do you gonna photograph. It included:

  1. What do you want to photograph?
  2. How do you want to photograph?
  3. When do you want to photograph?
  4. What gear to use in the photograph?
  5. How to set your camera?
  6. How many times do you gonna photograph?

The processing step will be different for every kind of photography. And you should learn it more from experience or read the internet.

3. Post-processing

Now for this last step, post-processing is probably the step that many photographers (amateur mostly) didn’t do. Because it’s not about photography and taking a shot anymore. But it’s about how do you make the photograph you previously shot, look greater. And it is done using computer software, and that is not a simple thing to do.

In this digital era, we would do it on our computers. But long ago, in the analog era, photographers use the darkroom for their post-processing.

Now what do you have to consider in post-processing:

  1. What software do you use?
  2. What do you want your photograph to look like?
  3. How do you do it?

Trust me when I say, post-processing is not a thing you can learn in an instant. It needs a lot of use for you to actually understand it. Take me for example, It took me almost two years to actually use Adobe Lightroom properly and fully.
