My Regret on Buying Cheap Tripod

When it comes to photography, one thing that you should remember is the gear you have. Of course, it doesn’t always have to be expensive. You can buy the cheap one and create the same photograph. It’s always a matter of convenience when it comes to expensive gear. At least that’s what I thought when I was bought my first tripod and I know that was a mistake.

So about 4 years ago when I first started photography, I was always thinking the important thing is the camera and others aren’t so much. So when I needed a tripod, I bought the cheapest one, about Rp. 150.000 (about $10). I bought an Excell tripod (I forgot what type it is) made from platinum. Quiet firm, really cheap, and I’m really happy about it, at least at first.

But over time, I realize something. many of my photos were blurred. At the time, I thought I was accidentally touching my camera. Also, sometimes the tripod shakes so much, either from the shake course by a car passing by or from the wind. Which almost felt down from the mountain before (It’s a good thing I manage to catch it). And then one of the tripod legs broke, so I bought a new and cheap one too. And in the end, the same thing happened. Well, this one can’t even hold my camera (probably too heavy). It took me 2 tripods in 1 year to realize my mistake, buying a cheap tripod.

Just a reminder, if you are a street photographer or any kind of photographer who doesn’t need a tripod, you probably won’t even realize this.

So I search the Internet. It seems many photographers have the same experience as mine. And then realize one solution to fix this problem is to buy an expensive tripod, which is stronger. So the kind of strong tripod is the one made of titanium or carbon fiber. Both are really strong and both are really expensive. And I’m not that rich.

So I save some money and I can buy a Sirui T 2204 X tripod made of carbon fiber. Very strong and I love it. And I have used it ever since.

I tell you this story because I want you to buy an expensive tripod. But to remind them to not make the same mistake as I did. Especially if you’re into landscape photography, which tripod is a necessary thing to have.
